FAQ - Residencies

Submit applications in the online system at my.visegradfund.org by the deadline (typically October 15th). The system opens 30 days prior. Register, remember your ID and password, and upload all requested documents in PDF format.

Finding a host organization
The host organization creates suitable conditions for residency implementation regarding space and technical needs. They provide artist support including local art scene contacts, networking opportunities, and often arrange accommodation (except Visual Arts Residency in New York and Fashion Residency in Milan).
For Performing Arts and Visual/Sound Arts, any registered cultural institution in the respective country qualifies. Other programs use permanent partners: Literary Residency uses Institut umeni (Prague), Petofi Irodalmi Muzeum (Budapest), Willa Decjusza (Krakow), Slovenske literarne centrum (Bratislava); Visual Artists NYC uses International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP); Fashion Milan uses Accademia Costume & Moda.
Applicants can use the "Mobility Finder" tool to search for potential hosts. The Fund does not provide additional assistance; applicants must independently identify, contact hosts, and secure acceptance letters when applicable.
Acceptance letters are mandatory for Performing Arts and Visual/Sound Arts residency applications; submissions without them are ineligible. Other residency programs do not require acceptance letters.
Starting and implementing a residency
Take three steps: inform your host organization about the Fund's decision and set arrival dates; check email for instructions from project managers; and confirm personal data plus provide bank account information per the emailed instructions.
Duration varies by type: Visual and Sound Arts: 2 months; Performing Arts: 1 month; Visual Arts in New York: 2 months; Fashion Residency in Milan: 2 months; Literary Residency: 6 weeks (Compact Spring Edition) or 3 months (Regular Autumn Edition).
Artists must be present on-site. Taking days of absence is permitted, but they cannot exceed approximately 15% of the residency period.
For Performing Arts and Visual/Sound Arts, the residency can split into maximum two parts with advance notice and Fund approval, all within the same calendar year. Other programs' periods are set by host organizations and cannot be split.
Not required. It is not a requirement of the programs to hold premieres or exhibitions within the residency period. Work-in-progress presentations are encouraged.
Yes. Acknowledge the Fund's support in any documentation and at public events, and use the program's logo to visually recognize the Fund's contribution.
Host organizations should contact the relevant cultural institute or embassy at their general institutional email address, informing them about the artist and presentations as early as possible.
The contract will be sent to your host organization before the start of your residency. You should sign it upon your arrival and send one copy back to the Visegrad Fund's address. (New York and Milan programs send contracts directly to residents' correspondence addresses before departure.)
No, but the Fund issues a residency confirmation which can be used as an enclosure to the visa application.
Financial support
Scholarships often have tax exemptions, though rules vary by country. Recipients should consult their home country's tax legislation or a tax advisor regarding specific conditions.
Payment methods vary by residency type: Visual/Sound/Performing Arts: 90% at residency start (after signed contract), 10% after completion (after approved final report), typically paid to host organization which disburses to artist. Visual Arts in New York: scholarship transferred to artist's account after contract delivery. Fashion Residency in Milan: scholarship transferred to artist's account after contract delivery. Literary Residency: scholarship transferred to resident's account; 6-week programs receive one payment; 3-month programs receive two equal installments.
Single-tranche scholarships are paid at residency start after contract signing. Two-tranche scholarships: first installment upon contract receipt; second after final report approval or (for 3-month literary residencies) after the first month completes.
Contracts are sent to host organizations before residency begins. New York Visual Arts and Milan Fashion residencies receive contracts at the resident's correspondence address before departure.
The scholarship can be used to cover any direct expenses connected with the residency. Financial settlement reporting is not required.
Reporting a residency
Both the artist and host institution must submit a narrative final report detailing residency results. The final report is only submitted electronically, by email to the Fund's assigned project manager. Applicants receive the questionnaire from their project manager prior to residency start. No financial report submission is required.
You and your host organization must submit a final report no later than 30 days after the end of the residency period. The report should incorporate photographic or video documentation of the residency activities.
