Shaping a Vibrant Improv Theater Landscape Within V4

The lack of accessible training opportunities significantly limits the growth and development of improv skills among theater practitioners, inhibiting the potential for innovative and engaging performances. At the same time, improv remains underrepresented as a preferred form of entertainment among audiences in the region. Therefore, the project was designed to address these challenges by promoting the inclusion and recognition of improv within the V4 theater community.

The project helped elevate the status of improv theatre by integrating it into well-known theatre venues across multiple cities where tour stops were held - starting from Bratislava, through Prague, Lublin and Budapest to Skopje. These places hosted performances in traditional theater spaces, helping to establish improv as a respected part of the performing arts community.

A flagship event, the “V4 Improv Connect Retreat”, took place in Bratislava, bringing together experienced improv performers, trainers, enthusiasts, and newcomers from the V4 region and beyond. This 6-day retreat focused on collaboration over competition, aiming to strengthen the improv community through immersive and intensive experiences. It gave a beginning to the “V4 Improv Tour”, which travelled to four more countries. Over 15 months, the core performers worked closely, sharing ideas under the artistic direction of Hon Chong (International Society for Arts and Culture), and bringing them to life in open public performances. From the very beginning, the project was actively engaging external experts, ensuring cost-efficient trainings. The tour highlighted the collaborative spirit and artistic growth of the core V4 improv team, further advancing the project’s main goals.

Through easily accessible workshops, the project didn’t just teach improv - it helped developing passions and fostered enduring connections that have strengthened local artist communities across the region. By providing a platform for diverse voices and backgrounds, it gathered a wide range of experiences that enriched the performances. More than just a series of trainings and shows, this project has made a lasting impact on improv scenes in all five countries, nurturing a sense of community, promoting meaningful cultural exchange, and paving the way for artistic collaborations that will continue to grow and inspire for long.
